In our increasingly digital world, being cyber-aware has never been more important. Whether you’re shopping, banking, or browsing the web, your personal information is at risk if you don’t take the proper precautions.

Okay, so, what is the good news?

Staying safe online doesn’t always have to be complicated! If you always keep these five tips in mind when using the web, you can be cyber-aware and better protect yourself from online threats.

Use Strong Passwords
A strong password is your first line of defense against hackers. The best passwords combine upper- and lower-case letters, numbers and special characters and sometimes even a short phrase! Here’s a good example: Kansas7 SuperbChartreuse

Avoid using obvious choices like your name or birthday. It’s also crucial to avoid reusing passwords or passphrases across your various accounts. If one account is compromised, your other accounts could also be compromised. Consider using a password manager to keep track of your unique, strong passwords or passphrases.

Avoid Using Public Wi-Fi
Public Wi-Fi networks, while convenient, can be a hotspot for many cyber criminals. These networks often lack proper security measures, making it easy for hackers to intercept the data you send and receive. If you must use public Wi-Fi, avoid accessing or sharing personal information like your bank account or company’s intellectual property. Better yet, use a VPN to secure your connection and encrypt your data.

Enable Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
2FA adds an extra layer of security to your online accounts. Even if someone manages to steal your password, they won’t be able to access your account or information if 2FA is installed. This typically involves receiving a code via text message or an authentication application. It is a quick, easy way to enhance your security on email, social media and financial accounts.

Beware of Phishing
Phishing attacks are among the most common ways hackers steal personal information. Be wary of suspicious emails, texts or messages asking for personal information or prompting you to click a link. Always double-check the sender’s email address and avoid any “urgent” requests. When in doubt, contact the sender with an official, verified communication channel to verify any request.

Update your Software
Keeping your software updated is essential for staying secure. Cybercriminals often find vulnerabilities in outdated software to gain access to your various devices. Whether it’s your computer’s operating system, smartphone applications or a web browser, installing updates as soon as they’re available to you ensures that you are protected against the latest threats. Enable automatic updates when possible so you don’t have to worry about missing patches.

By minding these five tips while using the web, you’ll be well on your way to being cyber-aware in the digital world. Remember, cybersecurity isn’t just a concern for big corporations; it’s something we all need to be mindful of in our day-to-day online activities. Stay vigilant and protect yourself from cyber threats!
