(September 2026) Wichita Falls, TX – For children in foster care, the comfort of a familiar face and connection to family can provide stability during an uncertain time. During National Kinship Care Month this September, 2INgage is recognizing the relatives, family friends and other trusted adults who step forward to provide children with safe, supportive homes and a continued sense of belonging.
Kinship care occurs when a child is placed with a relative or another trusted adult who already has a significant relationship with the child. These families help children maintain important family and community connections during times of uncertainty.
“Kinship caregivers step forward during some of the most challenging moments in a child’s life,” said Kaycee Robles, Senior Vice President of 2INgage. “Their commitment provides children with a sense of belonging, consistency and support while strengthening family and community connections.”
The impact of kinship care can be seen in stories like that of Cody*, a Texoma youth who entered care last year due to neglect and caretaker abuse. Cody had experienced multiple placement disruptions and a history of running away, creating significant challenges for both the child and care team.
Cody’s maternal grandfather wanted to provide a home for Cody however, health issues prevented him from being able to care for Cody long-term. Instead, he notified Cody’s case management team of “Katherine,” a relative who was a licensed foster parent and willing to care for Cody.
The connection between Cody and Katherine was immediate. Bonding over shared interests, particularly spending time outdoors and fishing, the two quickly developed a trusting relationship. In the months that followed, Cody’s grades improved at school and overall behavior became more regulated. Katherine ultimately adopted Cody, offering the permanency and support that every child deserves.
Stories like Cody’s demonstrate the life-changing impact kinship caregivers can have on children and families. Across the Texoma region, relatives and trusted adults continue to answer the call when children need them the most. Their willingness to provide care helps preserve family relationships and create pathways to reunification and adoption.
National Kinship Care Month serves as an opportunity to recognize these caregivers and raise awareness about the ongoing need for families willing to support children through kinship care and foster care. Every day, kinship caregivers strengthen families and communities by ensuring children remain connected to the people, traditions and support systems that matter most.
