This November, 2INgage marks National Adoption Month by celebrating powerful stories of love, dedication and family strength. Kimberly Copeland, an advocate and devoted mom, shares her and her husband’s journey of adopting their son, Jayson, illustrating the lasting effect of creating a nurturing and stable home for a child in need.

Inspiration Behind Adoption

For Kimberly and her husband, creating a family has always been a cherished goal. After difficulties, they realized their mission was to adopt and provide children with the love and stability they deserve.

“We’ve always dreamed of having a family and it’s heartbreaking to see so many kids without homes,” she says. “Growing up in a big family myself, I knew I wanted to give that same sense of belonging to others.”

Adoption Milestones

At first, Kimberly and her husband were thinking of adopting an older child. Then a call about 21-month-old Jayson changed everything. Kimberly immediately knew he was meant to join their family. “He’s such a great fit. He and my husband share so many similarities—they’re like two peas in a pod.”

Every year, they mark his “Gotcha Day,” a celebration of his adoption and the new beginnings it brought.

Impact on Family Dynamics

Adopting their son has enriched their family bonds. “It has brought our family closer; everyone cherishes time with him,” Kimberly explains.

With his fourth birthday approaching, they are excited to celebrate him and are hoping to adopt another child. “Jayson always talks about how much he wants a sister or brother, so we are hoping to adopt again soon,” says Kimberly. She further explains that she and her husband aspire to eventually foster children in need and give them the love and care they deserve.

Memorable Moments

Kimberly and her husband savor every “first” with their son – from family trips and vacations to his first haircut and Christmas. Her favorite memories include their trips to the beach and watching their son’s curiosity about the world.

“Seeing life through his eyes makes me feel like a child again and makes it so special,” remarks Kimberly.

Support System and Resources

While navigating the challenges and joys of adoption, Kimberly emphasizes the importance of a strong support network. Their community has been vital, with their church’s small group providing clothing and support during their son’s early days. Similarly, their friends, coworkers and family have also played essential roles and continue to offer them practical support.

Advice for People Adopting

Kimberly advises prospective adoptive parents to partner with an agency that reflects their values and to surround themselves with supportive people.

“Make sure you have a purpose and reasons behind your decision. The shift to parenthood is significant but with support and understanding, it becomes a fulfilling experience,” she advises.

If she could know anything before adopting, she says she wishes she knew more about children’s brain development. Nonetheless, her motherly instincts and support system have been a huge help. She encourages parents to practice self-care and take time to recharge themselves, as it is vital when caring for a child.

As we celebrate National Adoption Month, let stories like the Copeland family’s serve as a reminder that every child deserves a loving, supportive family. Their journey is a testament to the transformative power of adoption and the strength of love.
